Furniture transport: packing sofas and wardrobes safely

Furniture transport starts well before the truck arrives. Scratches and damage often happen while dismantling a piece, carrying it through a narrow doorway, or securing it in the vehicle. Sofa fabric, wardrobe corners, and glass doors each need different protection. Taking measurements and choosing packing materials in advance makes the move easier to control.

What should you measure first?

Record the sofa’s length, width, and height, including what changes when removable legs or cushions come off. For a wardrobe, measure separate panels if it can be dismantled. Then measure the entrance door, the narrowest corridor, any staircase turns, and the inside of the lift. If the largest item cannot pass safely, plan dismantling or another carrying route before moving day.

For a whole apartment, review Yuk.az’s home moving service. For a single sofa or cabinet, the item transport service may fit better. Those service pages are currently in Azerbaijani. Photos and dimensions help the team select a vehicle and crew.

How to pack a sofa

Remove cushions, detachable legs, and any accessible moving parts. Label each piece and keep fittings together. Cover the upholstery with a moving blanket or suitable protective cover; stretch film can hold the cover in place, but it should not be wrapped so tightly that it marks the fabric. Protect corners and projecting parts separately.

Leather and sensitive upholstery may need breathable protection, especially if the furniture will be stored for longer than the journey itself. Use material suited to the finish, and test uncertain packing on a small hidden area. A reclining or sofa bed mechanism should be secured against opening in transit without forcing its locks.

Protecting wardrobes and tables

Empty a wardrobe completely. Remove shelves, mirrors, glass panels, and doors when the design allows safe dismantling. Put screws and hinges into labelled bags. Protect wood corners with soft padding or cardboard, then wrap panels in moving blankets. Pack glass separately and keep it away from heavy boxes.

Detachable table legs can make doorways and lifts easier to navigate. A height adjustable desk or complex wardrobe may require assembly help; that service page is currently in Azerbaijani. Photograph joints before dismantling so the piece can be rebuilt correctly at the new address.

Do not put adhesive tape directly on polished wood. It can leave residue or affect the finish. Cardboard corner guards and soft separators spread pressure between pieces in the vehicle. Keep mattresses and upholstered parts away from exposed metal fittings. Disconnect powered furniture and store cables with its other accessories.

Lifts, stairs, and loading the truck

If furniture fits into a lift only diagonally, confirm that the doors can close and the lift can move safely. Respect its load limit. On stairs, agree on the direction of travel before lifting; sharp corners should not scrape the walls. Dragging heavy pieces across the floor can damage both the furniture and the surface, so use suitable moving equipment.

Inside the truck, large pieces need stable support. Polished surfaces should not rub together, and glass must not sit beneath heavy cartons. Pass securing straps over protective covers and tighten them enough to prevent movement during braking. For a small load, the cargo taxi guide helps with vehicle choice. For more furniture, the Gazelle size guide explains cargo space.

Prepare a simple room plan if the furniture will be placed immediately at the new address. Tell the team where the sofa, wardrobe, and table belong so heavy pieces are not carried twice. Protect recently finished flooring along the route. After assembly, check doors, shelves, and moving mechanisms.

Moving day checklist

  1. Measure the furniture, doorways, lift, and stair access.
  2. Remove sofa cushions, wardrobe shelves, and detachable parts.
  3. Pack fittings in labelled bags and glass in separate protection.
  4. Cover corners and finished surfaces with padding and blankets.
  5. Confirm how many people are needed for loading and unloading.
  6. Check all parts and surfaces against the list at the new address.

Photos of existing scratches help you compare the condition after the move. Test labels before putting them on finished surfaces. Include assembly or extra stops in the booking from the start. Contact Yuk.az with photos and dimensions to discuss the right vehicle and carrying help.

Frequently asked questions

Can a sofa be moved without dismantling it?

That depends on its size and the available doors, lifts, and stairs. Removing legs and cushions often makes the move easier.

Can clothes stay inside a wardrobe?

It is safer to empty the cabinet. Extra weight strains the frame, and shelves or doors may move while the piece is carried.

How should glass furniture be moved?

Remove the glass part where possible, pack it separately, and secure it away from heavy goods. Agree on the packing approach before the move.
